SUMMARY:Rossini - Petite Messe Solennelle\, Summertown Choral Society
DESCRIPTION:Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle\nGioachino Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle is a work of radiant contrasts — intimate yet expansive\, devotional yet full of operatic colour. Far from the austerity its title suggests\, it reveals Rossini at his most human: tender\, witty\, luminous\, and deeply moving. This is music that stirs the spirit and lingers long after the final note fades. \nFor this performance\, Summertown Choral Society is joined by four exceptional soloists — \nLouise Wayman – soprano\nRuby Bak – mezzo soprano\nSamuel Rose – tenor \nHarrison Robb – baritone\n\n— with harmonium adding its distinctive warmth and character. \nAs a special highlight\, pianist Julian Littlewood will perform Rossini’s Première communion from Péchés de vieillesse\, a miniature full of charm and expressive delicacy. \nTogether\, these artists promise an evening that feels less like a concert and more like a celebration of spring\, artistry\, and shared beauty. \nWe would be delighted to welcome you to a night of music that inspires\, surprises\, and reminds us why live performance matters.

SUMMARY:''The Secrets of my Failure''
DESCRIPTION:An irresistible comedy in Greek with English surtitles\, masterfully written by George\nIliopoulos and exquisitely directed by Anastasia Revi. The performance will take place at\nthe Cohen Quad\, Exeter College\, Oxford\, on Saturday and Sunday\, May 9th and 10th\, at\n3:00 pm and 7:30 pm. \nIn a play that balances between humour and disarming honesty\, adulthood is presented not\nas an achievement\, but as an ongoing rehearsal. Drawing from the very “springboard” of our\nlives — family\, teachers\, first friendships\, and those first glances through which we begin to\nunderstand ourselves in relation to others — the work unfolds\, with both wit and insight\,\nthe journey toward self-realisation. \nFrom our earliest need to belong and be loved\, to the obsessions of adult life — success\,\nrecognition\, image — the play illuminates the contradictions that shape us. Our\nachievements and failures\, our dreams and disappointments\, form an identity that\nconstantly teeters between what we believe about ourselves and what we imagine others\nsee in us. \nWith a sharp yet self-ironic tone\, the performance explores narcissism\, the anxiety of\nacceptance\, and the fine line between healthy self-reflection and relentless self-doubt. How\nmuch are we ultimately affected by the gaze of others? And how honest can we truly be\nwith ourselves in pursuing our dreams?

SUMMARY:An orchestra for today
DESCRIPTION:As Artistic Director of Aurora Orchestra\, Jane Mitchell has been thinking about what an orchestra can and should be for the past 20 years.  Aurora Orchestra has pioneered collaborative work across art forms\, memorised performances\, new training programmes for players and a programme of work for schools that provides a pathway for children aged 3 – 18 and enables teachers to embed orchestral music in the classroom. \nIn this session Jane will explore what it takes to create and sustain an orchestra  – the roles that are needed and how Aurora responds to an ever-changing world to ensure that the creative programme thrives and audiences fill the concert halls. There will be opportunities for questions and discussion on a wide range of topics and also a chance to take a look in detail at Aurora’s approach to transforming classical repertoire for different audiences.  As part of this Jane will be working with a small group of students to present scenes from Beethoven and the Dinosaurs\, one of Aurora’s flagship productions for young children.

SUMMARY:Contrapunctus: Victoria in Rome and Madrid

SUMMARY:Katona Twins Spanish Guitar Concert
DESCRIPTION:Katona Twins  ‘Alhambra Inspirations’ – Virtuoso Spanish music for two guitars \nThe Alhambra Palace was built in the Middle Ages\, in the city of Granada\, following the Arab conquest of Spain. With its impressive mosaics and sun-drenched gardens\, it inspired the creation of many wonderful compositions throughout the centuries. Several of those masterpieces feature in this unique programme.\nIdentical Twins Peter and Zoltan Katona have given recitals in major concert venues throughout the world including performances at Carnegie Hall in New-York\, Wigmore Hall in London\, The Concertgebouw in Amsterdam\, The Konzerthaus in Vienna and the Suntory Hall in Tokyo. They effortlessly transfer from strictly classical\, into more popular musical genres and played together with renowned musicians such as Yo-Yo Ma and world class ensembles such as the BBC Concert Orchestra. As the classical soloists of the “Night of the Proms” concerts they performed live to half a million people in arenas across Europe. They have won over ten international prizes at major competitions among others in New York and in London. They have released 11 CDs and their recordings featured in the US blockbuster TV series ‘Fargo’ and in a Broadway show with Hollywood star Hugh Jackman. They have been invited to perform for major international TV and radio stations such as the BBC\, RTÉ (The Late Late Show) and many others. \nInternational Press Quotes: \n“The intense ensemble between the Katonas is irresistible”\nThe Times\, London \n“Virtuosos who play with an almost eerie unanimity of style and considerable charm.”\nNew Yorker \n“Continuous interplay of give and take\, as if guided by some inner telepathic force”\nThe Straits Times\, Singapore \n

SUMMARY:Sophie Rose Debut Tour - Oxford
DESCRIPTION:On Friday 20th March\, Sophie Rose brings her first UK tour to Oxford for a rare and intimate performance at Caper Bookshop\, joined by special guest William Jack. \nBlending folk and country through a storyteller’s lens and powerfully raw vocals\, Sophie Rose crafts songs that feel quietly powerful and emotionally direct. This special show will feature unreleased material alongside select favourites\, performed up close in her favourite bookshop. \nWith a focus on connection\, conversation\, and emotional honesty\, this night is designed to feel personal — a chance to hear new songs in their earliest form and experience the stories as they’re being shaped. \nAn unmissable evening of honest songwriting\, shared in a room where every detail counts. \nSophie’s special guest\, William Jack\, is an Australian multi-style cellist and songwriter\, based in London. He is best known for incorporating his jazz guitar background into an unconventional style of cello playing\, with a passion for breaking boundaries between genres and cultures. His music transitions seamlessly from virtuosic folk & bluegrass compositions\, to non-Western sound worlds. \nAn unmissable evening of talent\, heart and artistry.

SUMMARY:Kaleidoscope Chamber Collective

SUMMARY:Lubomyr Melnyk - First return series
DESCRIPTION:The Ukrainian wizard-pianist Lubomyr Melnyk is back for two concerts in The New Space\, New College\, on the 23rd and 24th this February (8pm)\, once again as a guest of the Balliol College Musical Society. During his electric Oxford debut last November\, Lubomyr\, with his unique ‘continuous music’\, filled three concert halls in three colleges to thunderous applause and our first-ever sight of academics in tears. \nThis time around\, Lubomyr will be accompanied by the professional filmmaker Rupert Clague who is working on a documentary about him\, executively produced by Werner Herzog\, and we are excited to announce a collaboration with the creative arts research team Creative Empirical\, inviting all audience members to participate in a pilot study as a basis for further research on the remarkable effects of Lubomyr’s music and technique on himself and receptive audience members. \nThis “operatic classical music” is rooted in Western classical harmony and is fundamentally an ode to Beethoven\, but is heavily inspired by Eastern philosophies and traditions\, for example by Indian classical sitar. Producing an extremely immersive\, multitextural yet delicate sound from a single\, supremely resonant instrument\, continuous music is a new voice for piano music unlike any sound of an ordinary concert\, in a way that many find deeply moving.
