SUMMARY:Mark Thomas: 40 In Stand Up Years
DESCRIPTION:What?! Mark Thomas has been ‘standing up’ for 40 years? Impossible!! But how old does that make you…? Alas it is true; one of our oldest surviving alternative comics celebrates 40 years at the mic as he takes his brand-new show on the road this autumn. \n  \nSo\, here’s what he has done so far in numbers; performed comedy for 40 years\, won 8 awards for performing\, 4 for human rights work and 1 he invented for himself\, made 6 series of the Mark Thomas Comedy Product (Channel 4)\, written 6 books and 5 play scripts\, made 5 series of the Manifesto for Radio 4\, made 3 Dispatches for Channel 4\, sued the police (and won) 3 times\, curated and authored 2 art exhibitions with artist Tracey Moberly and had 1 Guinness World Record for holding 20 protests in 24 hours. \n  \nIf that’s not enough\, he’s also walked 724km around the length of the Israel Wall in the West Bank\, been credited with changing the law on tax avoidance\, started a comedy club in Palestine with Dr Sam Beale and campaigned successfully for things like trade union recognition for cinema workers and getting multinationals to change their practices. You’re right\, there’s more\, but your attention is running out and we’re running out of space. So\, let’s just say he’s generally mucked about trying to have fun and upset the right people…which he is really\, really good at. \n  \nThis is a taster menu of political and personal mayhem\, jokes\, rants and a state of the nation broadcast as he tries to turn ‘what the hell is going on’ into a cogent evening of stand-up.

SUMMARY:Caption Comics Festival
DESCRIPTION:The 2026 Caption Comics Festival\, dedicated to independent and self-published sequential art\, will be held in Oxford at Seacourt Hall on the weekend of the 8th-9th of August.  \nCaption is the UK’s longest running comics event that focuses on professional networking\, support and community. This year’s guests include Broken Frontier’s Six To Watch comics creators as well as Broken Frontier’s editor-in-chief\, Andy Oliver. \nEach year the event adopts a theme\, with this year’s being pirates. That informs the nature of some of the events including the traditional Saturday night quiz as well as a special comedic theatre performance. \nThere are also creator panels\, which this year are dedicated to comics journalism\, the impact of AI on art intelligence and how creative communities can provide well-being support. \nCaption is a non-profit event run entirely by volunteers with its organising committee made up of working creators and journalists that have a special interest in comics. Its focus is on supporting artists and instead of the typical comic convention approach of fandom and signings and meet’n’greets. At Caption there’s no dividing line of access between creators and readers. It’s also different from other events in that the only sales table is shared for everyone with only a 10% cut asked for to support the event’s running costs. \n“We have some fairly high- profile people coming and also people who are just literally doing it in their bedroom\, photocopying or printing it themselves. It’s quite a mix but it is all very friendly and really nice – and people do come from all over the country to take part.” – Peet Clack\, freelance illustrator \n“It’s all about small press publishing and giving advice to people who are trying to break into the industry.” – Alex Fitch\, host of Panel Borders\, Resonance FM \nTickets for Caption 2026 are on sale now at https://caption.sumupstore.com

SUMMARY:Traditional Village Fete in a glorious private garden in Brightwell cum Sotwell
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever hooked a duck or thrown a quoit? Are you looking for that vintage bargain or retro relic on the White Elephant Stall (the biggest in the world!)? Maybe you would like to buy that perfect painting or a pottery plate made by local artists. As ever you will be able to enjoy a Pimm’s or tea\, cake or ice cream whilst listening to the Silver Band. \nThere will be an Aladdin’s Cave of hundreds of children’s toys and books as well as the Curiosity Corner which will have the most bewildering array of sports equipment\, small furniture\, mirrors\, paintings\, birdbaths\, cushions\, rugs\, plant pots\, chairs\, walking sticks and there is bound to be an exercise bike (bought with misplaced enthusiasm). \nBy far the most enjoyable experience is visiting the Flower & Produce Tent. Each year villagers of all ages and abilities compete in different classes to win the coveted first\, second and third prizes for their effort. Hotly contested are the vegetable categories\, the flowers\, cakes\, produce\, craft\, photography and of course\, children’s art. \nThis very traditional village fete will be held in the gardens of Sotwell House at the very centre of the village. It has glorious formal topiary\, an orchard\, a tennis court and even a moat with ducks! \nLuckily\, you will find it easily in this warren of a village because all you need to do is find the fabulous Red Lion pub on Brightwell Street OX10 0RT and follow the bunting. \nAll the proceeds go to support clubs and societies in the village. \nConsiderate street parking only or take the number 33/33A bus and walk down Bell Lane to what 3 words: ///officer.clerk.sisters. \nWell behaved dogs on a short lead are welcome (with poo bags).

SUMMARY:Swing That Music with the Down for the Count All-Stars
DESCRIPTION:Join Down for the Count All-Stars\, the UK’s hardest swinging band\, for “one hellova celebration of vintage music” (TimeOut London) – it’s time to Swing That Music! \nDescribed as “a breath of fresh air on the swing scene” (Twinwood Festival) Down for the Count’s 10-piece mini big band is regularly found in jazz clubs across the UK and abroad (Ronnie Scott’s London\, Le Caveau de la Huchette Paris)\, at festivals including London Jazz Festival\, and on BBC Radio. Now they are bringing the sounds and feels of the best jazz clubs to theatres around the country – with an electrifying show full of incredible energy\, musicianship\, and their own signature wry wit and humour. \nIn the band’s updated show for 2026\, you’ll hear instrumental songs from the likes of Duke Ellington\, Count Basie and Glenn Miller\, vocal classics from singers such as Nat ‘King’ Cole\, Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald\, and original arrangements of jazz standards penned by musicians in the band. \nDown for the Count recreate classic tunes from the Swing Era\, but this is no mere nostalgia trip – the band perform each song in their own unmistakeable style\, breathing new life into the best vintage music. Combine that with the band’s top class instrumental solos\, sublime vocal performances\, and irresistible warmth and joie de vivre\, and you get a show that will leave you feeling uplifted and wanting more. \n“Awesome!!!” – Michael Bublé \n“My first impulse on leaving Cadogan Hall in the wake of a standing ovation on Sunday evening was to ask permission to lay 10 stars on this outstanding gig rather than the usual five.” – Jazz Journal
