SUMMARY:Sing with Summertown Choral Society
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we begin rehearsals for our next concert. Accompanied by Instruments of Time and Truth we’ll be performing Mozart’s Requiem and Solemn Vespers. \nSinging improves our sense of happiness and wellbeing and brings physical benefits too such as improving our breathing and posture. So why not join Summertown Choral Society which has been welcoming choral singers of all ages and voice parts and whether experienced\, rusty or complete novices since its foundation in 1961? \nRehearsals are at St Michael and All Angels Church in Summertown on Thursday evenings from 8 to 9.30. Rehearsals for our Winter Concert\, when we will be performing Mozart’s Requiem and Solemn Vespers accompanied by Instruments of Time and Truth\, start on 17 September. One of the most celebrated works in the choral repertoire\, Mozart’s Requiem is a musical experience of enduring grandeur and spiritual depth. It combines sublime choral writing\, brilliant orchestration\, and deep emotional resonance and is a joy to sing. \nThere’s no audition just come along to a rehearsal and sing with us and then decide if you’d like to join. SUMMARY:When the Blackbird Sings
DESCRIPTION:Please note this event begins in Blackbird Leys and mostly takes place on a bus through to the centre of Oxford with stops along the way\, ending at the Schwarzman Centre. There will be a shuttle bus leaving 15 minutes after the show finishes going back to Blackbird Leys. The starting venue will be announced soon and communicated to all bookers. \nAn immersive\, eye-opening\, heart-stirring journey through time.\nDirected by Erica Whyman and written by Natty Mark Samuels\, Helen Eastman\, and Afsaneh Gray. \nThis is the story of Paulette\, who was born in Jamaica\, crossed an ocean to expand her horizons and now\, in 1966\, she is determined to change the world. She hopes you will come along for the ride. \nJoin us in Blackbird Leys for a warm welcome and the start of a glorious odyssey through the city of Oxford. You will meet remarkable pioneers\, passionate changemakers\, a patron saint and fellow humans simply trying to survive. You will be invited to hop aboard a bus* to travel back to the 8th Century and forward to the 21st on a quest to find ancestors on whose shoulders Paulette can stand. We will end our journey at the new Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities\, with truth in our mouths and hope in our hearts. \n*Some walking or wheelchair travel is required\, on flat but sometimes uneven surfaces. Please ask us for more information – we are keen to make this experience as accessible as we possibly can within the constraints of some of the oldest parts of the city.   \nProduction originated as part of The Leys Festival 2026.

SUMMARY:Phase | Pattern | Pulse - The Sextets
DESCRIPTION:Presented in full 360° immersive audio\, these three sextets – Sextet\, Double Sextet and Six Marimbas – distill Steve Reich’s musical language into its purest form: interlocking rhythmic figures\, subtle shifts\, and harmonies which seem to vibrate in the air. In this innovative format the piece becomes a kinetic experience\, moving through space as much as through time. \nDeveloped by Loss﹥﹤Gain in collaboration with the Colin Currie Group\, this spatial reimagining places you at the heart of the music. Multiple instrumental layers pulse and overlap\, revealing the hypnotic beauty and physical energy that define Reich’s work.

SUMMARY:Doug Scott Memorial Lecture 2026 Everest South West Face 50 Years on
DESCRIPTION:Acclaimed mountaineers Paul ‘Tut’ Braithwaite and John Porter will be sharing their memories of Doug Scott at this evening of celebration marking the first successful ascent of Everest\, 50 years ago. \nSir Chris Bonington led this historic expedition in 1975 and the ascent of Mount Everest by Doug Scott and Dougal Haston via the notoriously difficult South West Face is recognised as one of the monumental landmarks in British mountaineering. At this special event in Oxford ‘Tut’ Braithwaite and John Porter will reflect on the expedition’s challenges\, triumphs\, tragedy and enduring legacy. The event will be anchored by Julie Summers and the input from the speakers will be accompanied by rare footage from the expedition and recorded interviews with Sir Chris and other expedition members. \nCAN merchandise will be on sale\, with drinks available under the shadow of T Rex in this beautiful museum in Oxford. \nAll proceeds from this event will support Community Action Nepal and will help fund Doug’s continuing humanitarian legacy in Nepal. \nThe speakers \nPaul ‘Tut’ Braithwaite: Tut is one the best mountaineers of his generation and was a close friend of Doug from 1966 until Doug’s death in 2020. He was a prolific alpinist and made the first ascent of the East Pillar of Mount Asgard in 1972 followed by the ascent of Pik Lenin in 1974 by its south-east spur. With Nick Escourt in the 1975 Everest SW Face expedition they overcame some immense technical challenges on almost vertical rock on the Yellow Band which had defeated 5 previous expeditions. This was the key to the success of the expedition and enabled Doug Scott\, Dougal Haston\, Pertemba Sherpa and Pete Boardman to reach the summit. Doug’s biographer Catherine Moorhead states that Tut and Nick ‘put up one of the greatest climbs in mountaineering history’. Tut was the President of the Alpine Club from 2007-10 and has been a CAN Trustee since 2000. \nJohn Porter: John is an American by birth and has been described as the ‘Climber’s climber’. He was also a good friend of Doug’s. Using alpine style climbing tactics he was part of the generation of climbers that pushed themselves to the limits. John climbed the NE face of Bandaka with Voytek Kurtyka and Alex MacIntyre (1977)\, the south buttress of Changabang (1978)\, the south face of Ranrapulka (1979) and the SE ridge of Tarke Kang (1982) with Alex MacIntyre. He was President of the Alpine Club from 2017-2019 and helped set up the Mountain Heritage Trust of which he is now a patron. His 2014 biography of Alex MacIntyre\, ‘One Day as a Tiger’\, won the Grand Prize for mountain literature at the Banff Mountain Festival in 2014 and is a worldwide best seller. John is also an award-winning poet and film-maker.
