Upon encountering the spirituals and plantation songs of America, Dvořák envisioned them as the future music of the country. This vision swiftly found its way into the heart of his most beloved work, the ‘New World’ symphony. In this masterpiece, the composer skilfully integrated the melodies of native America, creating music that exudes warmth, drama, and spontaneity. The symphony resonates with the spirit of nature, yet it also carries the undertones of sadness and yearning, as reflected in Dvořák’s poignant Cello Concerto – a poignant expression born from the Czech composer’s years spent as an expatriate across the Atlantic. Musical luminary Mischa Maisky joins Marios Papadopoulos and the orchestra for a concert that unveils heartfelt musical letters from America, complemented by the premiere of a new composition selected from last year’s composers’ workshop.
